Marketplace or your own store: which one actually fits you
You are selling on a marketplace and it is working. Orders come in. Then someone tells you that you should have a store of your own, and you are not sure whether that is good advice or just more work.
It depends on what you are trying to fix. Here is a way to decide.
What a marketplace gives you
People are already there, looking to buy. You list a product and it can be found the same day by someone who has never heard of you. Payment, the app and the buyer's trust are all in place before you arrive.
Your product is one listing among many. The buyer searches for a product, not for you.
What a store of your own gives you
A place with your name on it. Your branding, your photos, your way of describing things. One link you can put anywhere, that shows only your products.
A buyer who lands there came for you. When they come back, they come back to you.
What it does not give you is visitors. Nobody is browsing it until you send them. That is why this is a decision and not an obvious upgrade.
Stay as you are if
- You are still finding out what sells. A marketplace is a fast way to learn that.
- Nobody knows your name yet, and you have no way to reach people. No followers, no past customers, no group you can post to. A store with no visitors will not tell you what sells.
- You sell something people search for by product, not by brand. Phone cables, plain storage boxes. The buyer wants the item, not a particular shop.
None of these is a failure. It just is not time yet.
Add your own store if
- People already ask for you by name. They message you, they tag you, they ask where to order. Right now the only place you can send them is a marketplace listing.
- You have repeat customers. Someone who has bought twice does not need to find you again through a search.
- You already bring your own buyers. If most of your orders start from your own posts or your own messages, those buyers are already yours.
- How it looks matters to what you sell. Handmade, gifts, food, anything where the feeling is part of the product.
- You are taking orders by message and bank transfer. A store takes the order, the payment and the shipping cost without you typing each one out.
It is usually both
You do not have to leave anything. You can keep the marketplace for strangers who are searching, and use your own store for the people who already know you. The two do different jobs.
The useful test is where a buyer goes when they already know your name. If the answer is a page that belongs to you, you are set. If it is not, that is the gap a store of your own fills.
What it takes
Less than it used to. You do not need a designer, a developer or a payment gateway application. On Berkedai you register, add your products and share your link. The store opens on a berkedai.com address with your name and your branding.
The real work is the same work as before: telling people where you are.
